    Q:
How to clean and inspect the wheel bearing and wheel hub assembly on Mazda RX-7? Posted by Customer
    A:
Clean the grease off the hub assembly and outer bearing races using cleaning solvent, then thoroughly clean the bearings with the solvent and ensure they are completely dry without spinning them with compressed air. Inspect both the inner and outer bearings for any scratches, pitting, or excessive wear, paying close attention to the inside surface for galling, which indicates improper installation that may have caused sideways movement and damage. Additionally, check the rotor surfaces for pitting, scratches, or hot spots; if any signs of wear are present, it is advisable to have a machine shop turn the rotor on a lathe to eliminate imperfections, and if the wear is severe, the rotor should be replaced.

    Q:
How to replace the wheel bearings and wheel hub on Mazda RX-7? Posted by Customer
    A:
Raise the front end of the vehicle and support it with stands, then remove the front wheel(s). Take out the four locking clips, stopper plates, caliper, anti-rattle spring, and disc brake pads, ensuring the caliper assembly does not hang freely from the flexible hose to avoid damage. Remove the caliper mounting bracket, which is secured with two bolts on the inner side; the top bolt is easily accessible while the lower bolt is more challenging due to the steering drag link, requiring the use of a box end wrench and a screwdriver for access. Pry off the dust cap from the end of the spindle, then remove the split pin, nut lock, and adjusting nut. Carefully pull the hub assembly outward to force the washer and outer bearing to the end of the spindle, then push the hub assembly back and remove the washer and bearing. Pull the hub assembly off the spindle and remove the grease seal and inner bearing from the inboard side of the hub assembly. If the bearing outer race inside the hub assembly is pitted or scratched, it can be removed with a hammer and drift, but only if necessary. Repack the bearings with lithium-based grease, working it into the bearings from the larger diameter side, then press the inner bearing into place and install a new grease seal. Fill the hub cavity with lithium grease, install the hub onto the spindle, and slide the outer bearing and washer into place. Thread the adjusting nut onto the spindle, tightening it until the hub binds, then loosen it one-sixth of a turn to ensure the hub rotates freely. Spin the hub assembly a few times to seat the bearings and check for any sideways movement, tightening the adjusting nut slightly if necessary while ensuring the hub still rotates freely. Install the nut lock and new split pin, tap the grease cap into place, and install the caliper mounting bracket using a screwdriver for access to the bolts. Finally, install the disc brake pads, anti-rattle spring, caliper, stopper plates, and locking clips, then reinstall the front wheel(s), bleed the brakes, and lower the vehicle to the ground to test for proper operation and leaks in the system.
