1990 Mazda B2200 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install front wheel bearings on 1990 Mazda B2200?
A: Components may be installed and removed on B Series pickups by first raising and supporting the vehicle then removing the wheel and tire assembly then the drive flange and brake caliper with the caliper supported and not dangling on the brake hose. Then remove the snapring, the spacer, the set bolts and bearing set plate, with a proper tool remove the bearing locknut and the hub without the washer and bearing dropping. Once the dust cover is removed, disattach the tie rod end, stabilizer bar and lower shock mount, then use a jack to support the lower control arm and then disattach the lower ball joint nut and detach the knuckle with the lower arm. Do the same with the upper ball joint, then lower the control arm and take off the knuckle inspecting it to see if it is worn or damaged. Take the oil seal and bearing inner race out of the knuckle and remove bearing outer race with a drift. With the help of a slide hammer, the needle bearing is removed, the position of the rotor marked on the hub and the rotor and hub disassembled. Fit a fresh needle bearing and oil seal in the knuckle, roll in the bearing outer races in the hub and make the marks on the hub and rotor of the brake line meet, and then screw up the bolts. Install the outer bearing race, washer, grease inside the hub with high temperature, insert the halfshaft into the knuckle and screw the lower ball joint nut. Then take the lower control arm and fasten it on the upper ball joint, loosen both ball joint nuts and fit new cotter pins. Install lower shock absorber mount by reconnecting tie rod end, dust cover and loosely installing, and then install stabilizer bar. Vary the preload of the bearing by tightening the locknut, rotating the hub, loosening the locknut, measuring frictional forces, and cleaning it until the bearing set plate and snapring are installed. In the case of MPV, lift the vehicle and place on the support, remove the wheel and tire assembly, get rid of the locknut, and get rid of the brake caliper and rotor and hold the caliper. The tie rod end and lower ball joint are disconnected, knuckle/hub assembly is removed, inner oil seal is pried out, and the hub is pressed out of the knuckle. Take off the knuckle wheel bearing, outer oil seal and retaining ring and press the bearing. When the dust shield has been removed, mark the new one to line up, insert a new wheel bearing in the knuckle, install the retaining ring and outer seal, lubricate the seal lip and then insert the hub again into the knuckle and fit a new inner seal. In the case of Navajo, lift and prop the vehicle, loosen the assemblies of the front tires and wheels, and dismount the brake caliper and have it wired to the frame. Take off the hub locks, the wheel bearings, locknuts, and then the hub, rotor and outer wheel bearing. Take away the grease seal and inner wheel bearing, and then, in case you want to change bearings, take away the races. Unplug the steering knuckle to the spindle, take off the splash shield, and withdraw the shaft and joint assembly of the carrier. Take care to remove the oil seal and the oil needle bearing off the spindle, disconnect the tie rod and the ball joints. Take off the camber adjuster sleeve, lower ball joint nut and snapring and then take out the lower and upper ball joints using a C-frame and ball joint remover. To install, prepare the knuckle bore, and insert the lower ball joint, then attach it with the help of C-frame and installer, and then the upper ball joint. Install the camber adjuster and make sure that the slot faces are in the original position and then use a new nut and cotter pin to hold the knuckle. Wipe the spindle bearing bore, fit the bearing, and grease the seal lip then press a new shaft slinger. Fit the rubber boot and clamps to the stub shaft and occupy the splines and fix the assembly. Lastly place the splash shield and spindle, screw the spindle nuts, drive bearing races into the rotor, grease bearings, rotor, and finally the wheel bearing, locknut, thrust bearing, snapring, locking hubs, caliper, and wheel and tire assembly and then lower the vehicle.
