2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
A: For 2005 and earlier models, the transmission must be removed from the vehicle to proceed. The flywheel/driveplate should be taken off, and the rear main oil seal lip must be cut completely around with a razor knife, taking care not to damage the crankshaft sealing surface. The old seal can be pried out using a screwdriver wrapped in a rag or a seal removal tool. Engine oil should be applied to the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal, which should be carefully pushed partway into place by hand and then tapped into position using a flat punch, large socket, or suitable pipe until flush with the edge of the rear cover. The flywheel/driveplate is then reinstalled, and the remaining steps are the reverse of removal. For 2006 and later models, the transmission must also be removed, followed by the flywheel. The rear main seal housing bolts should be taken out to remove the housing, which should be wiped clean before carefully prying out the old seal. A small clean block of wood can be used to tap the new seal into the housing. The mating surfaces for the seal housing on the cylinder block and crankshaft should be cleaned, with any burrs or raised edges polished away. The inside lip of the new seal should be lightly coated with clean engine oil, and a thin plastic strip or cut beverage bottle can be used as a liner for installation. With the plastic liner in place, the new rear seal and housing should be carefully pushed into position on the crankshaft. The rear main seal housing bolts should be installed and finger-tightened while holding the housing in place, and the plastic liner should be removed to ensure proper contact with the crankshaft mating surface. The rear main seal housing bolts should be gradually and evenly tightened to the specified torque, and installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. Finally, the engine should be started to check for signs of oil leakage.
