The Mazda 3 Starter is engineered to quickly respond to battery power and transform it into the motion of the crankshaft that will start the engine to provide drivers with convenient ignition by the touch of the key or switch of the start button. The unit is energized by an external solenoid, which delivers current to the motor as well as sliding the drive pinion into the flywheel ring gear, and is powered by a heavy-gauge cable that is connected directly to the battery. Within the Starter housing, an armature is a rotating machine spinning between field coils or permanent magnets, and electromagnetic force rotates reduction gears to make the engine crank with the minimum of battery energy. The layout adopted previously in a direct drive was then replaced by a gear reduction layout in the Mazda compacts of later generations, with the main difference here being that the reduction layout multiplies the effect of the torque by adding additional gears, enabling a smaller and lighter motor to provide the same amount of twist. The two layouts have essential protection features such as an overrunning clutch which is disengaged when the engine is firing and a safety switch in the ignition circuit which prevents engagement when a vehicle is in gear. Regardless of being installed on manual or automatic trims, the system will not change much over all the years of Mazda 3 production, but will target reliability in cold-start performance and compatibility with the automotive electrical system of the car. - Q: How to disconnect the starter motor and replace it on Mazda 3?A:Unplug the cable of the negative input of the battery. Lift the car and place it safely on jackstands then take away the underbody cover. In models that use manual transaxles, take away the clutch release cylinder but only the release cylinder is to be moved, not the hydraulic line itself. Take out the fasteners on the wiring harness bracket and the bracket. Unscrew the nut of the starter solenoid wire and the starter battery cable nut, and unscrew the two wires of the starter. Take off the starter mounting studs and remove the starter which has an insulator/gasket between the motor and the block that should be replaced in case of damage. Installing is the opposite of uninstalling, and tightening of starter mounting stud and bolt is done.
