Mazda 323 Back Up Light Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
Where is the back up light switch located and how do you troubleshoot it on Mazda 323?
    A:
The backup light switch is on the front side of the transaxle case, toward the bottom. You will need to turn the ignition key to the on position and move the shift lever to Reverse at this point. This should close the back-up light circuit. As a result of this closure, the back-up lights will come on. Check the back-up light fuse if the lights are not lighting up. Check fuse and switch battery voltage with ignition ON. If OK, the battery may be faulty; if not, the battery may still be OK. When there is no voltage present on the battery side, check the wire between the fuse and the switch; if it has voltage, put shifter in reverse and check for voltage on the ground side of the switch. If voltage is not present on the ground side, switch out the switch. If voltage is present, find out whether one or both of the back-up lights are out. If either bulb is open then replace the bulb but if both bulbs are open then maybe the bulb is faulty but more likely than not there is open wire between switch and bulbs. To change the switch, disconnect the electrical connector in the harness and then unscrew and take out the old switch. Now, check the new switch for continuity across the terminals-there should be continuity with the plunger pressed down and none with it free. First, install the new switch and tighten to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connector. Check the Switch to make sure the circuit is complete.
