Mazda 6 Air Filter

The essence of the Mazda 6 Air Filter lies in the fact that it protects the engine by trapping dirt before it gets into the combustion chambers to maintain power and fuel economy at an optimum level. Each time you drive, the engine inhales thousands of gallons of air, which could include sand, dust, leaves, or exhaust particles as small as five microns, so the filter captures these pollutants rather than letting them scratch the walls of the cylinders or clog sensors. The two key styles have been employed by Mazda over the years of the model line. The original carbureted models applied a circular component mounted on the carb, and subsequent fuel-injection models, such as all Mazda 6 models, use a flat panel mounted in a sealed box connected to a throttle body by a plastic duct. The two types operate based on the same principle, which is making all the incoming air pass a fibrous barrier, yet the difference in shape fits their respective layouts. The designs of the media have improved. A majority of Mazda assemblies have a dry pleated paper core, which is cost-effective and efficient, but oiled cotton inserts or foam inserts have been found to be more effective in providing greater dirt capacity when driving in dusty conditions. In any style, it is important to periodically replace the filter because it will block airflow and reduce performance and mileage. Replacement of the Air Filter only requires basic hand tools, usually a wing nut or a few clips, and the owner must ensure any debris is removed from the housing and that the seal is tight so that every gulp of air travels through the new Air Filter. Adhering to the maintenance plan makes a Mazda engine dependable and responsive.

Mazda 6 Air Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Where is the air filter located and how do you remove and replace it on Mazda 6?
    A:
The air filter is housed in a structure which is at the left-hand side (drivers) of the engine compartment. To eliminate it, loosen the clamps holding the two halves of the housing together, then loosen the halves of the covers and remove the air filter element by unscrewing the clips, pushing the cover out of the way and removing the filter. Turn the filter inside out and examine the exterior, should it be dirty, change it, but should it be merely moderately dusty, then it can be cleaned by blowing it off at the back to the front with compressed air. As it is a pleated paper type filter, it cannot be washed or oiled and in case it cannot be adequately cleaned then it should be discarded and replaced. When the cover is off, ensure not to place anything on the housing and when driving the vehicle, it should not be with the air filter off because this may result in unnecessary excessive engine wear and possible fire hazards. Then, clean the inside of the housing and put the new filter in, making sure that it fits well and then attach the top part of the housing using the clumps.
