The primary task of the Mazda 6 Starter is to transform the power of the battery into rotation of the crankshaft that initiates the engine so that a small twist of the key or a press of a button starts up the car. A heavy cable is applied to send electricity out of the battery to a case-mounted solenoid, and the ignition switch closes the control circuit, activating the solenoid to force the drive pinion into the flywheel and to energize the internal armature. The armature, between the field coils or permanent magnets, is connected to brushes and a commutator, and this rotates at a high rate to turn the drive pinion until the engine takes over, when an overrunning clutch disengages to prevent damage. Most Mazda cars over the years have applied a standard direct drive motor, but over time several have applied a gear reduction design in which a small high-speed armature revolves around a reduction gear set and then is pushed through the pinion. This newer design provides the same amount of torque using less weight and fewer amps, which is beneficial during cold mornings or with parts that burden the electrical system. In all versions, the transmission has a neutral or clutch safety switch that prevents engagement of the transmission when it is in gear, thus safeguarding both the machinery and the people inside. - Q: How to remove and install the starter motor on Mazda 6?A:Four-cylinder models: Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Take out the housing for an air filter. Lift it up on jack stands and secure it properly. Get rid of underbody cover. Remove fasteners and bracket holding wiring harness, also remove starter motor solenoid wire nut and starter motor battery cable nut then disconnect both wires from the starter. NB: On 2.5L engines, clear off Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. Remove starter mounting studs and remove starter from its position. NB: The end of the starter is grounded to have a gasket between its engine and block that should be replaced if broken down in some way during installation is done in reverse. Ensure that you securely tighten your bolt and stud for mounting a starter. V6 models: Detach both tray as well as battery when working with one using 3L V6 engine and also air filter housing shall need to be removed too.
