Mazda 626 Exhaust Manifold

During engine combustion, the Mazda 626 Exhaust Manifold collects exhaust gases from all cylinders and directs the stream into one passage, which is then directed toward the catalytic converter, ensuring that the engine is free to breathe freely and passengers are not exposed to poisonous gases. It is attached to the top or side of the engine block and is sealed by a gasket, and its long intertwined tubes are then run to match the number of cylinders, such as a four-cylinder 626 that has four primary runners, which then combine into a single outlet. The Exhaust Manifold prevents intake reversion, a back pressure issue that pushes fresh air out of the combustion chamber and deprives the Mazda engine of power and efficiency by forcing the flow to be smooth. Designers have remained consistent in the fundamental job over the years while using different materials and locations to fit various engine bays; cast iron versions are more durable whereas the lighter stainless steel models are less prone to corrosion and dissipate heat more quickly but are all still attached to the same mounting points. Position may also vary, being either in front, back, or on top of the block, depending on the way each Mazda model positions the parts on the engine, but the principle that the gas is collected is never altered. Due to the increasing and decreasing lengths of the manifold with the change in temperature, cracks can form and this disrupts the air-fuel ratio and performance, and poisonous gases can leak to occupants; hence replacing a damaged Exhaust Manifold at short notice is mandatory for every Mazda driver who is counting on a good old 626.

Mazda 626 Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the exhaust manifold on Mazda 626?
    A:
Removal of the exhaust manifold requires first, you have to disconnect the negative cable of the battery after which the pipes of the air injection system are taken off. The second step is to remove the air injection fitting, retaining bolt and oxygen sensor and snap off the heat shroud. Put penetrating oil on threads of cylinder heads and catalytic converter retaining studs and leave it to soak ten minutes. At the engine, take off the nuts which hold the exhaust manifold on the cylinder head and the catalytic converter. Loosen the manifold, remove it disconnected with both the cylinder head and catalytic converter and take it off the engine. To install, make sure to remove all the gasket material off the manifold and the cylinder head with a gasket scraper, being careful not to scratch the aluminum. Install the new gaskets on the manifold, position it on the cylinder head, briefly install the retaining nuts, and install the nuts and bolts of the catalytic converter. Lastly, screw on the manifold nuts to the required torque starting at the center and a criss cross configuration.
