Mazda 626 Fuel Pump

The Mazda 626 Fuel Pump is a device that maintains the flow of gasoline from the tank to the engine at the pressure required by the engine at all times to ensure a smooth start and reliable power. Initial prototypes of the model applied a mechanical diaphragm pump screwed to the engine and powered by a camshaft eccentric, which worked fine with the carbureted versions of the time as it provided low pressure of about six pounds per square inch and recovered by itself when the carburetor float bowl was full. With the increasing horsepower, more powerful flow mechanical units, which were still cam-operated, were introduced, but these frequently required an external regulator to prevent flooding. When the model line was given electronic fuel injection, Mazda moved to the in-tank electric design. This small motor is submerged in fuel and rotates each time the ignition passes voltage through a relay, producing the 40 to 60 psi that the injectors require and keeping the motor cool and silent. The internal mounting will also reduce the risk of fire as any leakages will be contained in the closed tank. Onboard electronics, in case of an accident or a decrease in oil pressure, turn off the pump to prevent any damage. The two types of pumps have the same purpose, but they are located differently; they differ in their modes of drive and operating pressure, as mechanical drives rely on the movement of the engine and electric units are powered by an external motor. Knowing what system your Mazda runs on is useful when diagnosing hard starts and ensuring the existence of voltage or checking pressure to ensure that the Fuel Pump is pumping the correct volume. The Fuel Pump ensures that every Mazda commute is smooth for the driver of a 626.

Mazda 626 Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How is the fuel pump inspected and tested on Mazda 626?
    A:
The fuel pump is attached to the back (firewall side) of the engine with a cylinder head and is sealed, and then cannot be repaired but can be checked and tested whilst in the vehicle. Test the Fuel Tank, fill it and then make sure that there are no leaks at all gasoline line connections between the carburetor and the fuel tank with the engine on, and tighten any loose connections. Check all hoses to ensure flat spots and kinking that may cause limited flow of the fuel since any leak of air or ability to restrict the suction half of the fuel pump will be of great concern on the pump output. Also, inspect at the fuel pump diaphragm flange. To test the pump, take off the ignition coil wire on the distributor, ground it directly to the engine to avoid sparks, and take off the fuel inlet line on the carburetor and put it in a container. Turn the engine a few revolutions to see that the spurts of fuel are discharged at the open end of the line in a well-defined manner; otherwise the fuel line may be blocked up or the fuel-pump faulty. Lastly, disconnect the fuel line on both ends and blow through it with compressed air, in case the line is clear, remove the fuel pump and insert a new one.
  • Q: How to disconnect the fuel pump and install a new one on Mazda 626?
    A:
Unscrew the cable by loosening the clips of the negative battery and looseness fuel inlet hose and fuel outlet hose using the pliers. The second step is to take out the fuel pump mounting bolts, the pump, and the gasket. Install pump using new gasket, fit fuel lines, start the engine and check leakages.
