Removal and installation of the instrument cluster is carried out by beginning with the disconnection of the battery ground cable in the 1972 to 1984 models used. On 1979 and subsequent models, access to the cluster is through the removal of the meter hood, followed by the removal of the screws holding the cluster in place against the instrument panel and then the screws are pulled out to the rear in order to reach the assembly. Disconnect the
Speedometer Cable, remove the multiple connector out of the printed circuit and record the location of the two ammeter leads before disconnection. Disconnect the two connectors at the speedometer sensor switch (unless it is sealed in), and remove the screw that holds the ground wire on the back of the cluster before removing the instrument cluster. Installation requires the cluster assembly be placed along the opening, attach the ground lead, reattach the ammeter leads and apply the multiple connector. Connect the speedometer cable, screw the cluster, replace the meter hood on 1979 and above, reconnect the battery cable and ensure all the gauges are working. On models between 1986 and 1989, the first step is unconnection of the battery ground cable and the cable connected with the speedometer. Unfit the screws holding the cluster hood then remove the hood assembly then unscrew the screw holding the cluster pod to the dash panel and pull the pod out disengaging the wiring connectors. Take out trip meter knob, (also a clock adjust knob,) and then the screws holding the lens cover and cluster bezel. Unscrew the warning light plate, then, in groups that do not have a tachometer, the fuel gauge, the speedometer, the temperature gauge, and the printed circuit board in that sequence. In the case of clusters which have a tachometer, take out digital clock, temperature gauge, fuel gauge, speedometer, tachometer, printed circuit board, and so on. Removal is the opposite of installation.
