The Mazda B2200 Starter converts battery electricity into torque to start the engine of the truck, ensuring that ignition is achieved by a mere turn of the key. The Starter is supplied by heavy-gauge wiring directly from the battery to a solenoid connected to it, like a gate on a firearm. Upon a signal being triggered by the ignition switch, the solenoid causes a small drive gear to slide forward to engage with the flywheel, at the same time supplying current to the internal armature. Magnetic force is produced by field coils or permanent magnets surrounding the rotating armature; current is made to flow by a combination of brushes and a commutator, and the resulting rotation spins the flywheel until combustion assumes control. The problems that may occur include a discharged or faulty battery, loose or corroded connections, or damaged cables, which may result in slower cranking rates, or even cause a complete failure of the starter motor. The Clutch Pedal Position switch in the manual transmission cars is used to ensure that the starter motor is only activated when the clutch pedal is depressed whereas the Park/Neutral Position switch is used in the automatic transmission cars where it is only activated when the transmission is in a Neutral or Park position. The starter motor is a 12-volt system with the solenoid being mounted on the drive end-housing and needing to be energized by closing relay contacts which in turn activates the starter drive with the flywheel ring gear to begin to rotate the crankshaft and then the engine will start.
