Mazda B2200 Starter

The Mazda B2200 Starter converts battery electricity into torque to start the engine of the truck, ensuring that ignition is achieved by a mere turn of the key. The Starter is supplied by heavy-gauge wiring directly from the battery to a solenoid connected to it, like a gate on a firearm. Upon a signal being triggered by the ignition switch, the solenoid causes a small drive gear to slide forward to engage with the flywheel, at the same time supplying current to the internal armature. Magnetic force is produced by field coils or permanent magnets surrounding the rotating armature; current is made to flow by a combination of brushes and a commutator, and the resulting rotation spins the flywheel until combustion assumes control. All Mazda models since hand-cranking times are based on this electric principle, although it is possible to find trucks of various years which have either a direct drive or a design based on gear reduction. The direct drive model is one-to-one geared, placing the armature in direct contact with the drive gear, which is easier, but the subsequent gear-reduction version places a series of gears between the two so that a smaller motor can provide more torque, less noise on engagement, and better cold-start behavior. Both models come with an overrunning clutch that stops the drive gear on firing the engine to prevent damage. The safety circuits, like a neutral switch on automatics and a clutch switch on manuals, also make the system start only when the Mazda is not in gear, and Mazda B2200 owners can reliably and without any hassles start their Starter every morning.

Mazda B2200 Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What is the design and function of the starter system for engine ignition on Mazda B2200?
    A:
It is equipped with a Starter which will rotate the engine at a speed that can be ignited and happens to have a number of components in it including a permanent magnet gear-reduction starter motor with a solenoid-operated drive, a battery, a remote control starter switch, a Park/Neutral Position switch, a Clutch Pedal Position switch on models with a manual transmission, a starter relay, and heavy circuit wiring. Big cables, connectors and switches are necessary as the amperage needed during engine cranking is high and low resistance within the system is paramount to achieving peak performance out of the starter motor. The problems that may occur include a discharged or faulty battery, loose or corroded connections, or damaged cables, which may result in slower cranking rates, or even cause a complete failure of the starter motor. The Clutch Pedal Position switch in the manual transmission cars is used to ensure that the starter motor is only activated when the clutch pedal is depressed whereas the Park/Neutral Position switch is used in the automatic transmission cars where it is only activated when the transmission is in a Neutral or Park position. The starter motor is a 12-volt system with the solenoid being mounted on the drive end-housing and needing to be energized by closing relay contacts which in turn activates the starter drive with the flywheel ring gear to begin to rotate the crankshaft and then the engine will start. The starter drive assembly has an overrunning clutch that prevents the motor from turning at a high speed rate when starting the engine.
