All GLC models, 1983-85 626s, and carbureted 323s have a mechanical pump, which is mounted on the right side of the engine block on rear wheel drive models and on the left rear side of the cylinder head on most of the front wheel drive models. Purchase new gaskets of fuel pumps before it is installed. Start by lifting the hood and disconnection of the negative battery cable. Label the fuel inlet, outlet and return lines in the vicinity of the fuel pump connections so as not to be confused during installation. Pull the fuel line clips off the pump connectors then twist and pull the fuel line off the pump, with the 323 and 626 having inlet and return lines at the top of the pump and an outlet at the side. Disassemble the mounting bolts, usually two, off the block/cylinder head and take away the pump, gaskets and spacer. To install, place new gaskets on the block or cylinder head along with the spacer and fuel pump and install the mounting bolts. Connect the inlet, outlet, and the return lines to the respective pumps connection and fasten them using the line clips. Connect the negative side of battery back on, turn the engine on and look after fuel spills. To check, simply turn off the fuel inlet line to the carburetor and put a calibrated pressure gauge into the pump-to-carburetor line, being careful to avoid spillage of fuel. Turn on the engine and idle until the pressure gauge reads its highest allowable reading, and that the normal allowance is 2.84-3.84 psi (20-26 kPa) unless the 323, which is a Sedan or the Wagon, and has 3.98-4.98 psi (27.4-34 kPa) or 3.91-4.93 psi (27-34 kPa) respectively. Switch off engine, take off the pressure gauge, insert the fuel line to the carburetor, and operate engine until the carburetor float bowl is filled with fuel. To check on the amount of fuel released by the pump, allow the engine to run at idle rate one minute with a sturdy container seated close to the carburetor fuel inlet line. Unscrew the fuel line at the carburetor, inserting the open end into the container and run the engine until it shuts off or one minute and time the minute. Once more attach the fuel to the carburetor and revive the starter or idle the engine till the float bowl is full. Repeat fuel discharge and timing operation until the engine has completed its entire one full minute idle speed operation, and is pumping no less than 1.1 qts. of fuel per minute. Should the pump fail in the pressure or volume test then it should be replaced.
