Mazda MPV Coolant Reservoir

The Mazda MPV Coolant Reservoir keeps the extra antifreeze on hand such that the engine does not run out and overheat, causing corrosive air to enter the cooling passages. The plastic tank, located beside the radiator, holds the hot coolant, which overheats the pressure cap, but the tank subsequently receives the hot fluid when temperatures fall to ensure the sealed loop remains sealed, and wildlife is not at risk of being sprayed by leaking ethylene glycol. Over the years, Mazda has applied two key strategies to its bestselling MPV people carrier. Previous Mazda vans applied a simple overflow style; this is a non-pressurized container with a basic plastic cap, and in this case the radiator holds the spring-loaded pressure cap, and fluid flow moves to or out of the tank only through pressure change and the vacuum valve in the pressure cap. Subsequent models introduced an expansion design where the Coolant Reservoir, in itself, is at the top of the system and where the pressure cap is made of metal, and the tank forms part of the pressurized circuit. Since the Coolant Reservoir needs to maintain pressure in the system, this design incorporates heavier reinforced plastic and takes care of pressure variations by either having it vented or letting air into the reservoir instead of coolant. Although both designs utilize molded level checks with ease of cold-engine access, the expansion design has better packaging and minimizes the chances of aerating the fluid, as any air coming in will be over the coolant level. Whether it is a new year or not, it is a good idea to have the marked range in place so that all Mazda engines are fully covered.

Mazda MPV Coolant Reservoir Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to disconnect the coolant reservoir from the radiator neck on Mazda MPV?
    A:
Take off the radiator neck by disconnecting the reservoir hose. The coolant tank is found in the left front corner of the engine compartment and is mounted on two studs and the mounting nuts have to be removed before taking the tank out of the vehicle by ensuring that the coolant does not spill onto the paint of the vehicle. Removal is followed by installation.
