Mazda MPV Neutral Safety Switch

Mazda MPV Neutral Safety Switch is an electromechanical transmission range sensor that allows cranking of the engine only when the gear selector is put in the Park or Neutral position. It is mounted on the transmission in the assembled condition and monitors the manual lever position, sending a position signal to the powertrain/transmission control module. When the lever is aligned with Park or Neutral, the switch completes an internal circuit confirming to the control module that it is ready to actuate the starter. When the lever is in Reverse, Drive, or another forward position, it opens the circuit. This action prevents the starter motor from operating and stops the vehicle from creeping. The switch also provides continuous information about the position of the lever, which the control computer uses to engage the selected gear hydraulically through commanded solenoids. This two-way feature relates the logic for starting the vehicle with the automatic selection of gears. This allows for smooth gear selection, the correct regulation of line pressure, and protection of the torque converter clutch strategy. The component works in combination with other sensors (throttle position, vehicle speed, turbine shaft speed, brake on-off, and fluid temperature), forming part of the electronic control network in Mazda automatic transmissions. The Mazda MPV drivetrain's computerized architecture seamlessly integrates with the Neutral Safety Switch, which confirms lever position electronically, not through mechanical interlocks. A properly working Neutral Safety Switch in all MPV models with the automatic gearbox ensures starting safety as well as predictable shifting movement, which reinforces Mazda's reliability.

Mazda MPV Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
What is the function and adjustment process of the Neutral Safety Switch on Mazda MPV?
    A:
The selector lever can be pulled down into drive (the 4 or D gear) when the engine is running normally. The Neutral safety switch is on the side of the transmission. The backup lights should operate only in Reverse when the lever is in the On position with the key. The vehicle shall be raised and supported on jackstands if a fault is noted. The wires for the switch harness need to be disconnected, and an ohmmeter should be used to check the continuity of the Neutral safety switch (for electronically and hydraulically controlled models) and the transmission range switch (on models 1996 - 1998). After adjusting the switch, check continuity again, and if it does not work correctly, replace it. The transmission must be placed in Neutral, the retaining bolts allowed to be loosened, and pin the alignment pin into the appropriate hole for either electronically or hydraulically controlled models to make the adjustment. After the switch has been properly positioned, tighten the mounting bolts and remove the pin. If the switch requires replacing, the negative battery cable is to be disconnected. The shift lever is to be separated from the lever shaft, and the connector unplugged. To install, follow the instructions in reverse order to removal, and don't tighten up the retaining bolts until the switch has been set. Ultimately, the re-engagement of the negative battery cable should engage and the engine should be start in Park and Neutral to confirm the switch is adjusted properly.
