Mazda MX-6 Distributor

The Mazda MX-6 Distributor transmits the high-voltage power from a single ignition coil to each spark plug in the proper sequence to ensure the engine starts in a smooth and timely fashion. Early Mazda coupes were based on a mechanically activated ignition unit, which opened and closed the circuit of the coil driving the breaker points, a cam with corresponding lobes, centrifugal weights and a vacuum diaphragm to initiate or terminate the circuit and to advance timing with speed or load variation. The moving components became worn, the point erosion changed the dwell and a worn cap or rotor would have the car hard to start or weak at the cat. Subsequent Mazda models such as the second-generation MX-6 have switched to an electronic Distributor, with the points replaced by a tooth-shaped reluctor and a magnetic or Hall sensor supplying a solid-state ignition module to reduce maintenance. The design still rotates a shaft via the camshaft and still accommodates the rotor, cap and advance mechanisms, while the non-contact pickup removes arcing, maintains timing more precisely and provides the rotor with a hotter spark that burns cleaner. Typically, all the advance hardware is housed in the Distributor casing, and the gear is also applied to drive the oil pump, so it must move freely. Although electronic triggering has minimized regular tune-ups, wear may still be seen in bushings, vacuum units and weight pivots, and therefore a checkup on the cap, rotor and advance action can still be necessary for any old Mazda. In all, familiarity with what design is under the hood will enable owners to troubleshoot misfires and maintain the coupe in a healthy state.

Mazda MX-6 Distributor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a distributor on Mazda MX-6?
    A:
The first thing to do is to remove the battery negative cable and the coil positive terminal wire to remove the distributor. The next step is to take away the two retaining screws and to lift the distributor cap. Install a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt and turn the engine until the Distributor Rotor is perfectly vertical, at which point the position of the distributor flange relative to the rear housing of the engine is marked down. Unscrew the vacuum advance hoses, take the retaining bolt out and then lift the distributor off the engine. To install when the crankshaft was not turned after removal, lubricate the O-ring with clean engine oil, position the distributor into the rear housing of the engine with the rotor in the vertical position, and position the already created marks, and attach the retaining bolt. Lastly, attach the coil wire and the hoses of the vacuum. In case the crankshaft was turned after removal, then remove the number one spark plug and put your finger on the spark plug hole (whilst turning the crankshaft with a wrench on the pulley bolt). In case there is compression, keep turning until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley matches the T on the engine timing indicator and finish the installation.
