Mazda MX-6 Fuel Pump

The Mazda MX-6 Fuel Pump causes gasoline in the tank to flow into the engine so that the coupe can start up and commence normal driving. Early first-generation vehicles applied a camshaft-driven mechanical pump attached to the engine block, the lever of which trailed an eccentric in order to force fuel at about 6 to 15 psi into the carburetor float bowl where a valve was installed to prevent overflow. In Mazda history, that rudimentary design proved to be satisfactory since carbureted engines require only low pressure and medium volume. Later, with models incorporating electronic fuel injection, the in-tank electric pump was replaced by a pressurized in-tank cooled pump which is operated by a relay the moment the key is turned and injects gasoline into the injectors at 40-60 psi with an integrated sending unit reporting the level of the tank to the gauge. This Fuel Pump rotates quite softly, thus when it is in a no-start condition a not-quite-audible hum is usually the first sign, then a check should be made at the connector or relay to ascertain that there is no interruption. Flow is measured in gallons or liters per hour, and drivers can make an approximation of the amount they will need by multiplying the projected horsepower by 0.5 or 0.75 in forced induction and then dividing it by 6.2. Periodic pressure checks are done to ensure that the Fuel Pump is pumping consistently and delivering clean fuel to guarantee that every Mazda engine is responsive and that the life of the Mazda MX-6 remains spirited.

Mazda MX-6 Fuel Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to disconnect the fuel pump and install a new one on Mazda MX-6?
    A:
Unscrew the cable by loosening the clips of the negative battery and looseness fuel inlet hose and fuel outlet hose using the pliers. The second step is to take out the fuel pump mounting bolts, the pump, and the gasket. Install pump using new gasket, fit fuel lines, start the engine and check leakages.
