Mazda MX-6 Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to properly remove and reinstall the steering knuckle and wheel hub assembly on Mazda MX-6?
    A:
The first one is to raise the front of the car and rest on jackstands and take off the front wheel. Install the hub lock by putting a screwdriver or other tool through a brake caliper into the rotor to prevent any rotation of the hub and remove the front hub locknut. Unscrew the brake caliper and suspend it. Take out the strut-to- steering knuckle mounting bolts and nuts, and the nut that holds the tie rod on the steering knuckle. Unscrew the tie rod at the steering knuckle, then screw the retaining nut and bolt to unscrew the balljoint of the steering knuckle. Unscrew the steering knuckle/hub assembly out of the driveaxle, with a puller tool, and remove it off the vehicle. When examining the knuckle, look at it to see whether it is damaged, corroded, and the bearings should be loose, rough turned, or leaking grease. The hub must be disassembled by means of a press and special methods and this must be left to a dealer or even a shop equipped to perform this duty. Install the steering knuckle in a position on the driveaxle and lower Control Arm and strut and fit the retaining nuts and bolts and tighten them to the required torque. Install tie rod and screw in nut to the required torque followed by brake caliper and the locknut. Install the brake rotor by attaching the rotor to the locknut, then peen the collar of the locknut into the driveaxle groove with a punch or other blunt object then use a hammer to install the locknut. Lastly, fit on the wheel and lower the vehicle.
