Every vehicle is fitted with metric size tires that have fiberglass or steel belts and the application of other types or sizes can have an impact on the ride and the handling. Combining two kinds of tires, e.g. radicals and tires made with bias belts, may greatly affect the handling. There is a recommendation to have tires in pairs on the same axle and when a single tire is changed it must be the same size, type, structure, and tread design, and has the same or higher tread wear rating, traction rating, and temperature rating. Handling and wear are greatly influenced by tire pressure which must be checked at least once a month or during long journeys. Always make sure that tires are not so worn to the point of wear indicators or to a level below the recommended depth. Such models are available in steel and aluminum wheels and in case such alkaline materials as road salt or saltwater come into contact with aluminum wheels, the outside and inside should be sprayed with water as soon as possible. Wheels should be changed in case they are bent, dented, air leaks, have long bolt holes, heavily rusted or corroded, have a significant amount of wobble, or the lug nuts fail to remain tight. The welding or peening of wheel repair is not encouraged. The maximum distance and speed that one should drive with a temporary spare are not supposed to be beyond the prescribed driving distance and speed and neither should it use a normal tire. Non-contact Tire mounting machine should be applied when mounting or demounting tires in case of aluminum wheels. Balance of tires and wheels has a great impact on the overall handling, braking and performance; an unbalanced wheel may impact adversely on the handling, ride and tire life. A tire installed on a wheel should always be balanced by a shop with the necessary equipment, and an off-vehicle tire balancer should be used in order to run the risk of damaging the front transaxle. The tires are to be rotated back and forward and vice versa without involving the temporary use only spare tire in the rotation.
