The Mazda Protege Door Lock is a lock that protects the cabin, as all the doors are locked until the driver decides to unlock them, which provides security against theft, and the doors do not swing open when the vehicle is in motion. The first versions were based on a simple key-operated lock cylinder connected by rods to the latch, thus disabling the outside handle when the interior knob was turned or the key was flipped. With the development of the car line, Mazda also introduced power locking, and small electric actuators are placed on each of the latches; the driver could send current through a relay or control module to snap all the latches locked or unlocked with one switch on the dash or armrest. Subsequent generations also added remote keyless entry, which places a radio transmitter into the key fob transmitting a coded signal to a receiver located inside the car, allowing one-button operation as well as audible or light feedback when the lock button is pressed twice. A large number of units also connect to an automatic mode, which closes the doors when drive is chosen or the vehicle attains some preset speed, and opens them when park is chosen. During production, Mazda did not change the underlying latch, thus all Door Lock models continue relying on the robust mechanical connective clasp that holds the striker. - Q: How to remove and install the door lock and ignition lock cylinder on Mazda Protege?A:Remove the door trim panel and the plastic watershield. Reach inside the door and disconnect the control links from the latch. Mark the location of the door latch prior to removal and take out the latch retaining screws from the end of the door, noting that on 1997 and later models there is only one latch screw. Detach the door latch, and if equipped with power door locks, remove the door lock solenoid. For installation, align the door latch and securely tighten the door latch screws. Through the door inside access hole, remove the outside handle retention bolts or nuts, and on 1995 and later models, take out the lock cylinder electrical switch retainer and the switch. Remove the control rod from the lock cylinder, then use pliers or a screwdriver to pry the retaining clip upwards and off of the lock cylinder. Pull the outside handle and lock cylinder from the door. For installation, follow the reverse process. The door key cylinder electrical switch may be tested if necessary without removal; disconnect the electrical connector and check that the electrical continuity between the terminals is 0 ohms (no resistance) when in the unlocked position, and 1 K-ohm when in the locked position.
- Q: How often should the door hinge and door lock assemblies be lubricated on Mazda Protege?A:After every 5000 miles, or four months, the hinges and latch assemblies on the doors, Hood, and trunk, are to receive a few drops of light oil or lock lubricant. A small coating of grease should also be applied on the door latch strikers to lessen wear and so they move freely. Also, spray-on graphite lubricant on the door and trunk locks.
