Mazda Protege Power Steering Pump

The Mazda Protege Power Steering Pump provides light and predictable steering movement by transforming engine rotation into hydraulic energy which pushes the steering rack. The Power Steering Pump is belted off the crankshaft and draws fluid from its reservoir, pressurizes it, forces it through a high-pressure hose to the control valve of the steering gear, and takes the low-pressure return, forming a loop which multiplies the effort of the driver without breaking the mechanical connection between wheel and road. The initial Mazda Protege models were based on a simple hydraulic system that circulated at a constant rate, whereas subsequent Mazda Protege vehicles had a hydraulic system that could be electronically adjusted to increase or decrease assistance based on the speed and steering angle of the vehicle, so that on the highway the Power Steering Pump circulated fluid at a constant rate, whereas when parked in tight spaces the pump turned at a slower pace and the electronically variable valve was influenced by the speed and steering angle to increase or decrease the pump output. The two versions have the same core pieces, albeit the latter has additional wiring and a control solenoid. No matter the style, fluid leaks, squealing belts, or whining indicate trouble; increased steering effort at low speed is not usually a good sign, and decreasing output pressure is not always accompanied by more noises. Inspecting hose connections, refilling fluid, tightening or refitting the belt, and checking pressure against specifications are some of the ways to determine whether the Power Steering Pump is healthy. This single part maintains hydraulic pressure within the optimal level, thus keeping steering easy and confidence-building over all Mazda Protege turns.

Mazda Protege Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a power steering pump on Mazda Protege?
    A:
To disassemble the power steering pump, one has to disconnect the cable with the negative terminal of the battery. Drain most of the fluid out of the power steering fluid reservoir using a large syringe or suction gun and place a drain pan under the reservoir to collect spills when removing the hoses and top or cover the hoses with a lid to keep them out of the dirt. Unclamp the fluid return hose and release the fluid return hose and pressure line as required depending on the model year and remove the electrical connector of the pressure sensor as necessary. Then take off the pressure line-to-pump banjo nut and disconnect the line with the pump, and test the banjo bolt seals replacing them in case of leakage. Lift the front of the car up on jackstands and then loosen the pivot bolt/nut and adjuster bolt and take off the drivebelt. Then, to remove the pump, take away the pivot, adjuster and the mounting bolts/nuts and to get access to the engine components, remove the bolts of the pump mounting bracket. To install, do the same procedure but in reverse and always make sure that the pressure line fitting or banjo bolt is tightened to the correct torque and the drivebelt tension adjusted. Lastly, fill the fluid up to the level in the reservoir and drain.
