Mazda Protege Suspension Strut Rod Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Suspension Strut Rod on a rear wheel on Mazda Protege?
    A:
Each rear wheel has one trailing strut rod which is attached using a bushing in front of the rear wheel and connected to the back of the wheel carrier. Start by loosening wheel lug nuts, lifting the vehicle, and stabilizing the vehicle with jackstands and then remove the wheel. In case fitted with ABS, either remove the clamp bracket bolt or pull off the wiring harness of the speed sensor on the strut. Then loosen the strut rod-to- spindle bolt to loosen the rear strut rod- to-spindle bolt, and also on the models of 1995 and farther, the parking brake cable bracket. Next, unscrew the bolt of strut rod-to-body to separate the strut rod and the body and unscrew the rod of the vehicle. Installation is the opposite order in which the removal has been done, make sure not to tighten the bolts, until the suspension has been raised with the help of a jack to represent the normal height of a ride and make sure that the bolts are tightened to the recommended level. And lastly, add the lug nut and wheel, lower the car and screw the lug nuts to the required tightness.
