Mazda Protege Wheel Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What steps should be taken for overhauling a wheel cylinder on Mazda Protege?
    A:
Should an overhaul be specified, generally by reason of fluid leaks or sticky work, consider every possibility before commencing the work. This is very easy with the availability of new wheel cylinders. In case you decide to rebuild the wheel cylinder, make sure that you have a rebuild kit in advance. The two wheel cylinders should always be rebuilt as opposed to a single one. In case of the appearance of the brake fluid leakage, all brake parts should be washed, and dirty brake shoes should be changed. Firstly, lift the back of the car and rest it on jackstands, with the front wheels blocked so that it does not roll over. Take off the brake shoe assembly and wipe off all the dirt and foreign matter around the wheel cylinder. Unscrew the brake line using a flare-nut wrench, when possible, without removing it off the wheel cylinder. Unscrew the wheel cylinder mounting bolts, take off the wheel cylinder out of the brake backing plate and put it on a clean working table, and make sure to immediately plug the brake line to avoid the fluid leakage and contamination. To remove these items, take out the bleeder screw, dust boots, piston cups, pistons, spring and spring caps of the wheel cylinder body to overhaul it. Wipe the wheel cylinder with brake fluid, denatured alcohol or brake system cleaner and dry it with filtered unlubricated compressed air to blow out the passages. Look at bore in terms of corrosion and scorer marks; crocus cloth will remove slight corrosion and marks, however, replace the cylinder where the bore is scored and cannot be removed easily. Wipe the wheel cylinder bore, new piston cups and pistons with brake fluid and assemble the components, in such a manner that the lips of the piston cups face inwards. To install, fit in the wheel cylinder and screw in the mounting package. Turn the brake line to the cylinder, avoiding cross-threading the fitting, but not tightening it until after the gas has been condensed. Install the brake line and fit the brake shoe assembly by tightening the wheel cylinder mounting bolts to the torque recommended. Lastly, empty the brakes and test the functioning of the brakes properly before driving the vehicle.
