When undertaking different engine repairs or replacing the paper filter element, the air cleaner assembly has to go off and there should be the proper dislodging and re-lodging. You can start by cutting off the three spring clips to take off the top plate, then take off the air filter element. Then carefully screw out the wing nut within the housing of the center of the carburetor which screws into a stud. Before starting the cleaning process, loosen the fixing screw of the support bracket on the top radiator hose inlet at the front of the air cleaner. Disconnect the thermal reactor cover with a hot air hose attached to it that feeds heated air to the carburetor and unscrew the smaller air hose at the top of the thermal reactor. In addition, disconnect the air pump inlet hose in front of the air cleaner and the coasting valve hose in the left-side of the assembly in a manual transmission vehicle. Lastly, loosen the air cleaner assembly by a small part in order to reach and un-hook the idle compensator tube at the bottom. After removing the assembly, make sure to hold all mounting fasteners and hoses together. When doing something on the engine but not starting it, cover the carburetor to avoid the debris to enter. In case the engine will be required to operate without the air cleaner assembly, the idle compensator tube should be blocked with a hose cap or an appropriate bolt. When reinstalling, the installation process is in reverse sequence.
