Mazda RX-8 Oxygen Sensor
The Mazda RX-8 Oxygen Sensor maintains the fuel ratio of the rotary engine at the right level so that the car executes its functions without wastage of gas. This small component is mounted in the exhaust stream where an element of zirconium dioxide is coated with platinum to compare hot gases with those of outside air which, in turn, fires a voltage to the computer, which causes immediate fine tuning of fuel to ensure that the catalytic converter remains efficient. An inbuilt heater gets up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit in just a few seconds after booting up, making it possible to run in a closed-loop at a very early stage and reducing cold start emissions. Drive has found the throttle smoother and consistent throughout the rev range, evidence of the legendary durability of the component when it is subjected to the high exhaust heat of the rotary. The sensor is compatible with all the production years of the sporty RX-8 as Mazda maintained the same bungs before and after the converter. The early cars operate on a narrow band version, later models can operate on wideband but both would be connected to the same harness, and as a result, replacing a fresh Oxygen Sensor will only require a few minutes without needing to change any wiring. An Oxygen Sensor located at the rear also enables the computer to detect wear of the catalysts, and long before efficiency is compromised or safety is threatened, the computer will switch on a warning light. The unit optimizes emissions, reduces fuel consumption and protects the expensive converter by constantly adjusting air-fuel ratios, which are desirable to both the weekend racer and the daily commuter. Mazda has added hard shielding and moisture-resistant connectors; therefore, there is little corrosion and the factory component can endure thousands of heat cycles without going out of spec.
