1985 Mazda RX-7 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How does the metering oil pump function and what steps should be taken to check its performance on 1985 Mazda RX-7?
A: It injects a little engine oil into the carburetor to lubricate the internal seals which must be lubricated with the correct quantity of oil on a regular basis. Test metering oil pump and hoses to carburetor by checking in case of leakage, and clearance between the washer and metering oil pump lever must be 0 -0.04 in (0 -1.0 mm). Install a tachometer to the engine as per the instructions of the manufacturer or install the tachometer on the dashboard and then bring the engine to hot running temperature. Unscrew the two metering oil hoses on the left hand side of the carburetor and put a small squirt can of clean engine oil into the primary barrels of the carburetor after removing the air cleaner assembly and plugging the idle compensator hose. Install the discharge by putting a graduated beaker or measuring cup under the disconnected oil metering hoses, and then start the engine and adjust the speed to 2000 rpm. Operate the engine 6 minutes and measure the volume of engine oil expelled in the graduated container, making sure to squirt the engine oil in the carburetor primary barrels in the same volume as the oil that comes out of the container. The oil discharge in the container is supposed to be 2.0-2.5 cc after 6 minutes and in case it is not within the specification, change the metering oil pump.
