Removal and overhaul of the oil pump with the engine still in the vehicle is not possible without unfavorable conditions, but given better conditions, the oil pump may not need servicing before the engine is required to be overhauled. Oil pump is positioned at the front side of the engine, which will require removal of most of the front engine parts, and the removal of the
Oil Pan. The first step is to take out the
Radiator, drain the engine oil and take out the oil pan by unbolting it; this may need jacking up the engine to provide more space. Then take off the alternator by unscrewing the strap bolt, the pivot bolt and the wiring, keeping a note of the wires connections. Uninstall the air pump, which is done by disconnecting the rubber air outlet hose and the bolts; the connecting rod to the metering oil pump, including the cotter pin location, is also required to be disconnected; and finally, the two oil hose connections. Line up the yellow painted timing mark on the eccentric shaft pulley with the indicator pin, and then take out the distributor cap and lock bolt, lifting the distributor out and covering it. When the air conditioning is available, take out the air conditioning pulley then the
Water Pump and metering oil pump assembly. Loosen the pulley bolt on this shaft and swing it off, perhaps with a brake on the flywheel, or vise grips to avoid rotation. The front housing may then be removed off the engine block by loosening the bolts and tapping the same. Take the distributor drive gear off the eccentric shaft, verify slackness of the chain, bend the tab of the lock washer straight on the oil pump sprocket and remove the nut and lock washer. Move the oil pump sprocket, the eccentric shaft, and the chain together off the pulleys and then remove the four bolts holding the oil pump to the engine block and remove the oil pump. To re-install, place the oil pump, and fix it with four nuts making sure that it is free of any obstruction. Install the key onto the shaft of the oil pump, the drive chain, eccentric shaft sprocket and oil pump sprocket as one piece, aligning the keyways, with the tab washer and nut, connecting them to the shaft to the required torque. Install a new gasket by sliding the distributor drive gear onto the eccentric shaft, fitting a new O-ring on the oil passage of the front housing, and cleaning the gasket surface with a clean surface before installing a new gasket. Install the front cover on the engine, connect the bolts and replace the oil seal in case necessary, and run engine oil on the seal. Install and tighten eccentric shaft front pulley to required torque with excess gasket portion being cut off to have clean oil pan mounting surface. Install the flange and gasket of the oil pan mounting and apply a silicon sealant over the parts before putting the oil pan back in place, then the water pump and tighten the bolts accordingly. Install the oil metering pump and parts making sure that the cotter pin is fitted, verify the position of the eccentric shaft pulley, and the distributor, and also adjusting it where required. Install distributor cap and the plug wires and reinstall the alternator and use the belt tension. Install the air pump then the radiator. Add an appropriate antifreeze mixture and oil in the engine, attach the negative battery cable and remove the high tension leads to avoid starting. Prime the oil pump by turning the engine over, reconnecting the leads, starting the engine, and verifying that the oil pressure is correct and then disconnect the external gauge and verify that no oil is leaking.
