1985 Mazda RX-7 Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to clean, inspect, and assemble a shock absorber on 1985 Mazda RX-7?
A: Clean and inspect all disassembled parts for wear or fatigue, replacing parts as necessary. Install the piston rod and pressure tube assembly into the shock absorber body, then place a new O ring on the piston rod guide. Fill the shock absorber body with 13.7 cu-in (225 cc) of shock absorber fluid. Center the piston rod in the shock body by installing a pilot over its threads, which can be obtained through Mazda dealers under part number 49 0370 590. Apply grease to the lip of the seal and carefully insert the cap nut through the pilot onto the piston rod. With the piston rod extended to its maximum length, temporarily tighten the cap nut using a suitable wrench. Fully lower the piston rod and tighten the cap nut to a torque of 36 to 43 ft-lb (5.0 to 6.0 m-kg). Finally, install the spring and its related components before attaching the shock absorber to the car.
