1988 Mazda RX-7 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How are adjustments made to the metering oil pump on 1988 Mazda RX-7?
A: These metering oil pump changes are done in the oil pump linkage which is in the front of the engine just near the lower radiator hose. Place the adjusting screw lock nut loose, and then turn the screw until the desired amount of oil has discharged. An increase in screwing the adjusting screw results in an increase in the discharge and a decrease in the discharge when the adjusting screw is turned out and the reverse is also true, the change in the discharge is about 0.2 to 0.3 cc with a minute of engine activity at 2000 rpm. After a satisfactory adjustment has been made, screw the adjusting lock nut in place. Lastly, verify the clearance between the pump lever and the washer, and it should be 0 to 0.04 in (0 to 1.0 mm), and should a adjustment be needed it should be done using a washer that is suitable.
