Q: How to remove and install a Brake Shoe Set on 1989 Mazda 929?
A: The rear brake parts can be removed and installed by first loosening the lug nuts of the rear wheels, lifting the vehicle, and placing it in a safe position and then removing the rear wheels. Then dismount the disc brake caliper and then hang it using a rope or a piece of wire in order to avoid stress on the brake hose. Take out the rotor disc of the wheel hub, and in the case of trouble in doing so, remove the cap of the adjusting screw and move the adjuster to get more clearance of the shoe. Disassemble the upper and lower return springs, anchor clips and pins of the brake shoes, and take off the brake shoes, adjuster, and also disconnect the operating lever with the parking brake cable. To install, put grease over the projections of the backing plate, adjuster and operating lever. Attach the operating lever to the cable of the parking brake making sure that the arrow marked on the lever is facing the front of the car. Install the threaded section of the adjuster all the way in, install the brake shoes, pins, clips, and springs making sure that the adjuster is between the brake shoes with the threaded portion facing the front on the left wheel and the rear on the right wheel. Lastly, fit the rotor and caliper, adjust the parking brake where necessary, fit the rear wheels, and lower the vehicle. To adjust, get the disc brake service hole, find the hole with a flat blade screwdriver, and turn the adjuster down until the rotor clips, and then turn the adjuster up 3-5 notches in the reverse direction to adjust.
