Mazda 929 Brake Shoe Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when regarding Brake Shoe Set and asbestos on Mazda 929?
    A:
When handling rear wheel drive models, one should be careful since brake shoes can have asbestos- a known carcinogen; thus one should wear an approved filter mask or respirator to prevent inhaling dust along brake surfaces and the cleaning of brake components with compressed air is not allowed; instead one must use commercially available brake cleaning fluid. The first thing is to withdraw the brake drum and with the parking brake released, clean the brake components. Take off the return springs of the upper and the lower side of the shoe and remove the shoe holding spring and the main shoe and the parking brake chain. Take out the parking brake lever using the second shoe. Examine the linings regarding wear or damages and change where necessary. Installation: Grease the adjusting screw threads, sliding surfaces of shoes and flanges of backing plate with grease. Swing the lever of the parking brake on the secondary shoe, clamp it and fit the Parking Brake Cable. Install the connection between the shoes, connect them with the anchor and wheel cylinder, fix them to the backing plate, and couple the return springs. In case the grease has stained the shoes it can be removed through light sanding. The last thing that needs to be done is to install the drum, shoemaker, and do it on the other side. In the case of the front wheel drive models, this caution is also the same as asbestos. Loose the lugs on the rear wheel, lift the vehicle and remove the rear wheels first then remove the brake drum then clean the parts. Unconnect parking brake cable, eliminate the return springs and the front and rear brake shoes. Pull back the self adjuster with a screwdriver. To install, lubricate the contacts, fit the shoes and clips in that order and attach the parking brake cable. Do the same with the other side and pump the pedal to change the drum-to-shoe separation. In the case of 323, MX-6 and 1983-89 626 models, take similar care about asbestos. Take off the brake drum and clean-up the parts, then to make the leading shoe easier to remove release tension on it. Removal of the return springs, holding pins and clips should be done using brake pliers. Disengage the shoes and the wheel cylinder and the anti-rattle spring and adjuster in the case of new shoes. Make sure that linings are of the right thickness and change them in case they are worn out. To install, rub grease on the given areas, press the operating lever pivot pin, connect the return spring, locate the trailing shoe and fix the adjuster and anti-rattle spring. Install the lower return spring, install the leading shoe and repeat the same steps on the other side making sure to run the brakes a few times before driving to make sure the shoe clearance adjusts automatically.
