1989 Mazda 929 Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and install the water pump for rotary engine on 1989 Mazda 929?
A: In order to install and remove the water pump, initial step is to disconnect the negative battery cable. In case of carbureted engines, take out air cleaner assembly and take out wiring connection of the water temperature switch. In cases with fuel injected engines, rotate the eccentric shaft to position the top mark of the pulley with the indicator pin. Disconnect the compressor of the air conditioner, air pump, power steering, and alternator drive belts, then the alternator and air pump. The next steps to follow are to remove cooling fan and drive assembly followed by removing driver of air conditioner compressor that is in front of the alternator/air pump drive pulleys. Put a pan under the lower radiator hose, or disconnect it, or remove the drain plug in order to drain the system of coolant. Disassemble the hose to the upper radiator and coolant bypass. In case of fuel injected engines having automatic transmission disconnect the water thermoswitch and water thermosensor connectors. Removing the water pump and cooling fan pulley, Unscrew the bolts and extract any spacers or shims on the studs that the gasket is not mounted on, and remove old gasket material on the mating surfaces. Install, position, and install a new gasket with sealer then install the water pump with spacers or shims as necessary and torque the attaching bolts to 13-20 ft. lbs. (18-27 Nm). In the case of fuel injected engines that have an automatic transmission, reconnect water thermoswitch connectors and water thermosensor. Reattach the bypass and upper radiator hoses back to the water pump and attach the lower radiator hose at the radiator or close drain plug. Install the compressor drive pulley of the air conditioner, then the cooling fan and drive as clearance of 0.63-0.94 in. (16-24mm) must be maintained between the cooling fan blades and the cowling. Install alternator and air pump, and all drive belts should be tensioned correctly. In the case of carbureted engines, the air cleaner assembly should be installed back and the water temperature switch wiring reconnected. Lastly, attach the negative battery cable, pour in a proper mix of coolant, start the engine and examine whether there are coolant leakages occurring.
