Q: How to remove and install a fuel pump on 1990 Mazda B2200?
A: The fuel pump is contained within fuel tank and is fitted to tank sending unit assembly. It can be removed by first releasing the fuel system pressure thus disconnection of the negative battery cable and thereafter taking off the fuel tank under all the safety measures taken around fuel. Wipe out any dirt near the assembly of a sending unit/fuel pump to avoid contamination during the removal. To disassemble the sending unit/fuel pump assembly, loosen the screws which secure the assembly, and disconnect electrical connectors and the fuel hose where needed. The process of installation is in the opposite direction and a new seal rubber gasket should be installed. In the case of the MPV, once the pressure in the fuel system is relieved, and the negative battery cable is disconnected, the rear seat and the floormat must be removed to expose the fuel pump cover, disconnect the electrical connector and fuel lines of the assembly on the sending unit/fuel pump, clean the area, and then remove the assembly. The installation is also the same and it needs a new seal rubber gasket. To the Navajo, the process involves disconnection of the negative battery cable, defuel system pressure, hoisting of the vehicle and removal of the fuel tank. Wipe the area near the fuel pump attaching flange and then with a brass drift turn the locking ring counterclockwise and remove it. Clean mounting surfaces, apply Molybdenum grease to a new seal ring and connect it and then put the assembly back in place. Install the fuel tank again, ensure that it is at least half-filled with fuel, reconnected the negative battery cable and turned the ignition key to RUN a few more times to pressurize the system, and verify any leaks before starting the engine. To test, release the pressure in the fuel system, loosen the negative battery cable, and attach a fuel pressure gauge to the outlet on the fuel filter. Once battery is reconnected, the battery is connected to the 2-pin test connector, and set the ignition ON, and observe the fuel pressure in range. To the Navajo, make sure there is enough fuel in supply, release the pressure, attach a gauge to the Schrader valve and make sure a test lead is grounded before turning on the fuel pump and ensure that the pressure is within the range required and then release the pressure and remove the gauge.
