1990 Mazda B2200 Rack and Pinions Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install rack and pinions in power steering components on 1990 Mazda B2200?
A: Removing and installing steering components requires first of all placing and supporting the front end with jackstands. Unhook the pressure and return lines at the rack and pinion and place a pan to drain under it. Unscrew the pinch bolt which connects the wormshaft to the steering shaft coupling and unscrew the cotter pin and nut which connects the pitman arm to the center link using a ball joint tool to loosen them. Unbolt the rack and pinion from the frame, and in case the pitman arm is to be taken out of the sector shaft, matchmark them. To install, place the rack and pinion and mount the mounting hardware and assemble the components with particular attention to the torque at each connection. In the case of Navajo, the lines of pressure and return are disconnected from the rack and pinion and plugged to keep out the dirt. Carefully take out the upper and bottom rack and pinion shaft U-joint shield of the flex coupling, and take off the flex coupling of the rack and pinion and column steering shaft assembly. Once the vehicle is lifted, take out the pitman arm with its attached nut and washer followed by a tool to take out the pitman arm on the sector shaft and not to damage the seals. Hold the rack and pinion and take out the attaching bolts, pushing the gear out of the flex coupling. During installation, fasten the bottom U-joint shield to the rack and pinion, place the upper shield and slide it into position and the flex coupling to the steering shaft assembly and center the rack and pinion input shaft. Install rack and pinion input shaft with bolts to the frame side rail and tighten the flex coupling bolt. Before attaching the piece to the sector shaft, the pitman arm must be straight ahead and can then be attached using a washer and a nut that is tightened to the desired torque. Lastly, attach the pressure and return line to the rack and pinion, pour the fluid in the reservoir, and switch on the ignition to spread the fluid by rotating the steering wheel. Check the fluid level again, add as required, reconnect the coil wire, start the engine and check to see whether there are any fluid leakages.
