Q: What steps should be followed for the removal of the crankshaft and balance shafts on 1992 Mazda MPV?
A: It is assumed that the flywheel or driveplate, crankshaft balance/vibration damper, the chain of the balance shafts, and the timing chain or the timing belt, as well as the oil pan and the oil pump, and the piston/connecting rod assemblies have been already removed. Before removing the crankshaft, the rear main oil seal housing needs to be unbolstered and detached off the block. Prior to the removal of the crankshaft it is important to measure the endplay by fitting a dial indicator to the stem and contacting to one of the crank throws. Turn the crankshaft to the back and dial the pointer to zero and then pry it to the front and record the distance travelled; the difference in distance measures the endplay. When it exceeds the recommended value, inspect the crankshaft thrust surfaces, and where no wear is present, new main bearings are necessary to eliminate the endplay. When there is no dial indicator, feeler gauges may be utilized by prying or pushing the crankshaft forward and stepping feeler gauge between the crankshaft and the front of the thrust main bearing to measure clearance. Check the main bearing caps with markings of their position, numbered consecutively in front to rear, otherwise mark them with number stamping dies, or a centerpunch. Relax the main bearing cap bolts bit by bit until one can loosen them by hand, keeping track of any of the stud bolts so that they can be attached again. Tap the caps with a soft-face hammer (with the bolts on the lever, should necessary) to loosen them on the engine block, and be careful not to drop the bearing inserts. Slowly remove the crankshaft of the engine, preferably with help, because the weight, and make sure that the bearing inserts are once in place in the engine block and main bearing caps, and the bolts are once tightened by finger. Record the length of main bearing cap bolts, and install again before replacing any that have been stretched out beyond the maximum permissible length. Four cylinder engines The balance shaft thrust plates are removed and the balance shafts are pulled out of the engine block, taking care not to bend them in the bushings, and labeled to fit back in the right place.
