Mazda MPV Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to prepare a crankshaft for reassembly on Mazda MPV?
    A:
In preparation of crankshaft, first remove all the burrs in oil holes, by hammer or file, or scraper, taking care to chamfer the edges to avoid breakage of new bearings. Clean off the crankshaft completely with solvent and dry it with compressed air, using a stiff brush, and flushing the oil holes. Check the journals of the main and connecting rod bearings and look at them to see whether they are unevenly worn, scored, have pits, or cracks. Rub a penny in every journal; copper will be rubbed off and stamped in the crankshaft, requiring the journals to be re-ground. Also, inspect crankshaft, cracks and other damage, and these should be identified during magnafluxing at an automotive machine shop. Measure the main and connecting rod journals by measuring diameter at various positions using a micrometer to determine the presence of a taper or out-of-round, and measure the journals any place on each end. Should any journals get damaged or worn out more than the required limits, then reground crankshaft and make sure that the right sized bearing inserts are in place. Check the journals of the oil seals to see when they are worn or damaged; the grooves or nicks may cause them to leak when put back in place and in repair the crankshaft may be pressed on a thin sleeve or replaced. Lastly, discuss the main and rod bearing inserts. In four-cylinder engines, check the journals of balance shafts and scuffing, overheating and bushing in the cylinder block. In case any problems are identified, the balance shafts and bushings have to be changed, which should be done by an automotive machine shop because of the tools needed. Measures the diameter of the balance shaft journals and the inside diameter of the respective bushings and determine the oil clearance by subtraction of the journal diameter and the bushing diameter and compare the results with the values. In case there is any excessive clearance of the oil, yet the journal diameters are normal, replace balance shaft bushings.
