1992 Mazda MPV Cylinder Head Parts and Q&A
Q: How should you prepare and reassemble the Cylinder Head after valve servicing on 1992 Mazda MPV?
A: Whether the head was taken to an automotive repair shop to get the valves serviced or not, make certain that it is clean and then proceed with the process of reassembling it. In case the valve has been sent out to have its valves serviced, the valves and the parts will already be fitted and you will be able to begin with the reassembling process by installing the spring seats before the valve seals. Special seals are to be fitted on both valve guides and with a hammer and deep socket or seal installation tool, each valve guide is gently tapped and positioned on the guide until it is fully in place, also care must be taken to avoid twisting the seals or cocking them when fitting on the valve stems. Start at one end of the head by lubricating the valves with the first valve, and putting molybase grease or clean engine oil on the valve stem. Install the valve springs (and shims, where appropriate) over the valves, clamp the springs with a valve spring compressor, and then precede to install the keepers in the groove, making sure that they fit in and stay in place when you gradually release the compressor. A drop of grease can also be put on each keeper to keep it in place should it be needed and the springs should be fitted with those that have the narrow pitch coils on the lower end. This step has to be repeated with the other valves to make sure that the components are sent back to their correct places without interchange. Measure the installed valve stem height of the installed valve stem by a vernier or dial caliper (between the spring seat and top of the valve stem) and ensure that the springs are not shimmed to a height lower than that which was set. To a four-cylinder engine, put molybase grease on the rocker arm faces, the camshaft, and rocker shafts prior to installation, and to a V6 engine, fit the camshafts, hydraulic lash adjusters, and rocker arm assemblies to the head not forgetting the head bolt stretch limits.
