1996 Mazda MPV Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: What are the key characteristics and considerations regarding the rear axle shaft on 1996 Mazda MPV?
A: The rear axle assembly is a hypoid semi floating type, with a pinion center line that is lower than the ring gear center line. The carrier is a welded assembly comprising of the axle tubes, the differential housing and the differential carrier, which is a casting attached to the axle. It is also worth noting the axle identification number on a small tag on the rear of the differential housing by the filler plug before purchasing replacement parts, particularly the axleshafts. Most of the time, a rear axle problem may be a result of some other problem and hence a comprehensive check will be necessary to be able to conclude that they have a rear axle problem. Such common noises that may be confused with the diagnostics of the rear axle include road noises, which may be caused by an old or underinflated tire, and engine and transmission noises, which may be misleading because it moves along the driveline. Isolating such noises is best done by finding the engine speed at which the noise is most pronounced, then pulling over the vehicle, turning to the Neutral gear, and revving the engine to the same speed as finding out whether the noise still occurs, which means that the rear axle is not the problem. It is usually beyond the abilities of a home mechanic to perform overhaul and general repairs on the rear axle and the procedures are restricted to pinion oil seal repairs, axleshaft, bearing, and oil seal repairs, differential removal and installation, and removal and replacement of the whole axle assembly itself due to the specialized tools and critical measurements that are needed.
