1997 Mazda MPV Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install an exhaust manifold for V6 engine on 1997 Mazda MPV?
A: In order to take out the exhaust manifold, first, remove the negative cable of the battery, and then safely place the car on jackstands. Apply penetrating oil to the screws connecting the exhaust manifold and allow to sit and then remove the oxygen sensor electrical connector. When using the left manifold, first take out the nuts attaching the exhaust to the manifold and the bolt connecting the exhaust to the engine block then unbolt the exhaust to the block and the manifold. In case of the removal of the left manifold, remove the oxygen sensor. Get the vehicle down and separate the bolts that hold the heat shield(s) to the manifold(s) with a ratchet and a pivotal head to reach it with ease. In case of working on the left side, it could become advantageous to eliminate the air intake duct. Carefully unbolt the crossover pipe in the manifold then loosen the nuts holding the manifold in place to the cylinder head and lift the manifold off. Wipe the surfaces of the head and manifold off to remove any deposits of carbon and check both surfaces of the head and the manifold against cracks and damage. To install, cover the cylinder head studs with new gaskets and also install a new gasket between the manifold and crossover. Install the manifold and insert the mounting nuts and bolts and screw them into the middle and out in three or four equal steps to the required torque. Tighten the nut connecting the manifold and the cyclone head, then screw the crossover pipe to the manifold. Install all the remaining components in the inverted order, with fresh gaskets on the connections to the exhaust pipe, and lastly start the engine, and look after any leakage of the exhaust.
