2004 Mazda Tribute Exhaust Manifold Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the exhaust manifold for 4 cylinder engine on 2004 Mazda Tribute?
A: When working on 2008 and earlier models, with 2.0L and 2.3L engines, the first step will be to raise the vehicle and place it on jackstands. Take out the exhaust pipe and catalyst converter and wipe away the old flange gasket. Then remove the dipstick tube bracket bolt and remove the assembly out of the engine compartment. Disconnect the electrical connector of the oxygen sensor, and withdraw the sensor off the exhaust manifold. Next, loosen the exhaust manifold heat shield by removing the mounting bolts, then the exhaust manifold mounting bolts then the entire heat shield, the exhaust manifold, and the old gasket. Check the exhaust manifold whether there are cracks or any damage and change it. Wipe the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts and examine them where broken, replacing any broken. Carefully remove all gasket material on mating surfaces, to prevent scratching, and check in case of wear or cracks. Inspect the exhaust manifold mating surface with a straightedge and feeler gauge and repopulate or resurface in case of limits are overranged. Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts, remove the old gasket, and re-assemble the manifold in alphabetical order (i.e., in the middle first followed by the outer ones). Lastly, test the engine to ensure it is not leaking exhausts. On 2009 and subsequent models, in this case, 2.5L engines between 2009 and 2012 and 1.6L engines, lift the vehicle and hold it firmly. In 1.6L engines, take off the turbocharger. Removing the front exhaust pipe and intermediate exhaust pipe, disconnecting the upstream oxygen sensor, and eliminating exhaust manifold heat shield removes the workload will be assigned to 2.5L engines. Unbolt and disassemble the exhaust manifold mounting nuts, and unbolt and remove the exhaust manifold along with the gasket. Check the exhaust manifold and either replace or machine it flat. Install exhaust manifold mounting studs and tighten them, then install new gasket over the studs, then install the manifold and new nuts tightening them in steps beginning with the center out on models with 1.6L and up to the recommended torque on models with 2.5L. Install in reverse sequence, checking that the mounting nuts of the catalytic converter have been tightened to the correct torque before the converter bracket bolts are installed.
