2008 Mazda Tribute Brake Shoe Set Parts and Q&A
Q: Should the return and hold-down springs be replaced with the Brake Shoe Set on 2008 Mazda Tribute?
A: The return and hold-down springs should be replaced whenever the brake shoes are and this is because the cycle of heating and cooling of the shoe is constant and as such the spring may lose its tension with time thus wearing off the shoe faster. The first thing to do is to loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle and firmly place it on jackstands and block the front wheels to ensure that it does not roll. Lift the parking brakes and take off the wheel. The four rear brake shoes should be changed concurrently so handle one set of brake assembly at once to prevent confusion of the parts. Take out the brake drum and the parking brake must be fully released, it should be able to be pulled off easily, but in case it does not, then take the plug out of the drum and with a hooked tool release the lever off the adjuster as the wheel turns to pull the shoes off the drum. Wipe the assembly of brake shoes with brake system cleaner. To remove springs, remove shoes, and replace them with new ones, follow the detailed instructions to unhook springs in 2007 and earlier models, be sure to lubricate the adjuster screw and use high-temperature grease at points of friction. The procedure differs slightly depending on 2008 and subsequent models; disassemble retaining clips as needed and spray parts with brake cleaner, as well as test and verify that the wheel cylinder is not leaky when transferring the adjuster lever to the new shoe. Check cracks and other damage before reattaching the drum, resurfacing is the recommended procedure to avoid the problem of out of round drums. Install the drum, and turn the star wheel to the point of the shoes dragging a little and replace the plug. Install the wheel, screw the lug nuts, lower the car, and make some stops to adjust the brakes and then observe the functionality of the brakes.
