2013 Mazda 6 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How is the rear Crankshaft Seal installed for V6 engine on 2013 Mazda 6?
A: The rear main oil seal is a one-piece design pressed into a rear main oil seal carrier which is mounted at the rear of the block, and the removal of the transaxle has to be done first. The rear seal is removed with either a seal-removal tool or screwdriver, but care should be taken not to scratch the crankshaft seal surface. In the case of 3.7L engines, the CKP sensor is to be eliminated. The oil seal carrier mating face on the cylinder block and that of the crankshaft must be cleaned and any burr or raised burin on the crankshaft must be polished to avert the seal failure. A small amount of clean engine oil should be applied to the inside lip of the new seal and a thin and durable plastic strip of two inches in width or a cut two liter plastic drink bottle can be cut and placed round the inside of the circumference of the seal to aid in the installation. The new seal can be installed with the plastic sealed liner facing the contact surface of the crankshaft by sliding it over the surface and a special seal installer may be used. In the case of 3.0L engines, the manufacturer tool that is utilized is 303-178 and in the case of 3.7L engines, the manufacturer tool that is utilized is 49 W011101 and a small hammer are used to tap the seal into the block. Once the plastic liner or tool has been installed, it should be taken off very carefully so that the new seal can be touching the crankshaft mating surface in the correct place and that there is no evidence of oil leakage when the engine is in operation.
