2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata Coil Springs Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the coil springs and shock absorber assembly on 2014 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
A: On the 2005 models and older, the first step is to loosen the lug nut on the front wheel, put the vehicle on safety stands and take off the front wheel. Paint the spring to make it easy to install it again correctly. To facilitate the control arm in supporting the load so that the brake hose will not stretch, loosen the lower pivot bolts of the control arm to allow the control arm to drop below its usual position. Disconnect the lower bolt and nut of the shock absorber then in the engine compartment, disconnect the upper mounting nut of the shock absorber without disconnecting the center nut underneath the cap. Using the lower control arm, pry downwards in order to loosen the shock absorber/coil spring assembly of the fender and pull it out of the vehicle. Check the shock absorber body to see whether it is leaking, dented, or cracked and the coil spring to see whether it has any chips or a crack in the coating and the spring seat to see whether it has any cuts and deterioration. In case of any problems, then disassemble shock absorber, and dispose used dampers properly in an automobile parts shop or dealership. Installation is in the opposite sequence of the removal and all the fastening is tightened to the required torque and the outer end of the lower control arm is lifted to replicate normal ride height. On the 2006 onward models, the lug nuts on the front wheel are loose, so it is necessary to loosen it, raise the vehicle, and then firmly place it on jackstands, then remove the front wheels. Take out the strut bar and the strut mounting plate nuts and the mounting plate, remember that the same nuts hold the top of the shock absorber in place on the shock tower. Open the nut and bolt on the lower end of the shock absorber and disconnect the lower end of the shock absorber to the lower control arm before opening the upper part of the shock absorber and upper control arm. Lastly, check the shock absorber/coil spring assembly and to install, follow the same sequence of parts in the reverse order of removal then always make sure that the outer end of the lower control arm is raised to represent normal ride height and then tighten the fasteners.
