For 2005 and earlier models, begin by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the rear of the vehicle, and placing it securely on jackstands before removing the rear wheels. If working on the left side, take off the protector shield for the fuel tank filler pipe. Support the lower
Control Arm from below and detach the lower link from the stabilizer link to allow the lower control arm to drop, ensuring it does not pull on the brake hose. Remove the shock absorber's lower bolt and nut by holding the shock/coil spring assembly's lower bolt with a socket, undoing the nut, and pulling out the bolt. In the trunk, take off the upper mounting nuts without removing the center nut, then lower the shock absorber/coil spring assembly free of the fender and remove it from under the vehicle. For inspection, the process for the damper unit or coil spring is the same as for front shock absorber/coil spring assemblies. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, tightening the fasteners to the specified torque, and before tightening any fastener that runs through a rubber bushing, raise the rear knuckle with a floor jack to simulate normal ride height. For 2006 and later models, start by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and placing it securely on jackstands before removing the rear wheels. Remove the clip securing the parking brake cable to the bracket at the rear brake caliper, disconnect the cable, and set it aside. Detach the rear brake caliper assembly and suspend it safely with wire. Disconnect the inner end of the rear upper lateral link and remove the nut from the upper end of the rear stabilizer link. Remove the shock absorber lower bolt, then inside the trunk, take out the carpeting. To remove the left shock absorber, take off the metal shield in the trunk that protects the fuel filler neck by removing the necessary bolts. Remove the upper shock absorber mounting nuts and the shock absorber retaining bolt from the underside of the wheel well, then take out the shock absorber. For inspection, the process for the damper unit or coil spring remains the same as for front shock absorber/coil spring assemblies. Installation is again the reverse of removal, ensuring to tighten the fasteners to the specified torque and raising the rear knuckle with a floor jack before tightening any fastener that runs through a rubber bushing.
