How to disconnect and replace the alternator on Mazda 3?

Unplug the cable on the negative battery terminal. Lift up the front of the car and place it squarely on jackstands and then take away the right front wheel. Take off the splash shield and the screws and pushpins of the splash shield. Take off the engine cover on the upper part by thrusting it upwards at both ends and off mounting posts in the middle. Remove the coolant reservoir tank and put it aside. In case of 2.0L and 2.3L engines, disconnect the alternator B+ terminal nut and electrical connector, the alternator mounting fasteners, and the alternator out of under the car. In 2.5L engines, loosen the drivebelt and then loosen the alternator duct mounting nut and duct along with the duct mounting bracket bolts at the front of the alternator, and then clear the bracket. Set the air conditioning line aside, but do not disconnect. Unscrew alternator B+ terminal nut, electrical connector and unscrew the three alternator mounting bolts and extract the alternator out of the engine top. When changing the alternator, it is best to carry the old alternator with you when buying a new one so that the new or re-built one is exactly the same, and with the same electrical connections and markings. Numerous new or rebuilt alternators are not fitted with a pulley so verify with the policy of the store on pulley swaps; purchase a puller to take the pulley off by yourself. Removal is the opposite of installation, and would be to make sure that the mounting bolts of the alternator are clamped firmly. Reconnect cable to negative terminal of battery and check the charging voltage so as to confirm that the alternator is functioning properly.

Mazda 3 Alternator is the on-board generator that ensures that the battery is charged and all the lights, stereo, and sensors are active as long as the engine is running. It is placed in two cast aluminum parts which rotate around a rotor; a belt drives the rotor inside windings of copper stators, generating a magnetic field that produces AC power. A rectifier with a built-in heat sink of diodes converts that alternating current to steady DC to allow the battery to restore itself after each start and to allow the electrical system to get a clean voltage for smooth driving. Along the drive end, a pulley and cooling fan are mounted on the same shaft through bearings at the front and rear, and in the rear case are carbon brush equipment and voltage control hardware also. Older Mazda models applied a separate bolt-in regulator which varied the field current, whereas more recent Mazda 3 models allow the powertrain control module to do so on the fly to avoid dim lights or battery boilover. These two types of regulation are the historical difference between the two common styles, but both of them have the same essential components, which consist of stator, rotor, and diode bridge.
