Always connect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery before disconnection and lastly to avoid short circuiting the battery with the tool which is used to loosen the cable clamps, do not connect the negative cable to the battery even when changing the cable to the positive terminal, always connect the cable to the negative terminal first. Unscrew the old cables out of the battery, trace each of them to the other end, and unscrew them and where each cable is routed so that it can be correctly installed. In case of the replacement of any old cables, accompany them to buy new cables because it is very important that one replaces the existing cables with new ones of the same kind. Wipe the threads of the solenoid or ground connection with a wire brush to remove rust and corrosion and put a thin coat of batter terminal corrosion inhibitor or petroleum jelly on the threads to prevent future corrosion. Install the cable on the solenoid or ground connection and screw the mounting nut or bolt firmly. Always make sure that you are not overstretching the cable to the battery post by putting a new cable to the battery before connecting the cable to the battery post, a positive battery post is first connected with the cable then a ground cable is attached to the negative battery post.
