Mazda 3 Blower Motor Resistor

The Mazda 3 Blower Motor Resistor allows the cabin fan to provide various speeds by adding measured electrical resistance to the heater or air conditioning circuit, thus changing the breeze from a light puff to a blast as conditions dictate. This small component, the Blower Motor Resistor, in the ductwork where passing air maintains its coolness, routes the current through alternate internal routes every time the dashboard switch is moved, and each route provides a different resistance and establishes a different motor speed. The older Mazda models had a ceramic block filled with coiled wire, a simple system that dissipates excess heat, but the more recent Mazda models have a smaller circuit board format, which does the same task with reduced space consumption and enhanced heat transfer; although the construction has changed, the principle of operation has remained the same. Since with the high fan option the power is directly fed to the motor, a broken Mazda Blower Motor Resistor would tend to leave only that top speed active, and so the fault is readily noticeable by the driver. No other significant styles have been introduced in the lineup, and all vehicles that are built on this platform continue to use the same concept of resistive speed control. Replacement of the cabin air filter will ensure adequate airflow through the resistor and will avoid overheating, maintaining smooth climate control for any owner with a 3 and its highly important Blower Motor Resistor.

Mazda 3 Blower Motor Resistor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Is removing and installing a blower motor and blower motor resistor challenging for home mechanics on Mazda 3?
    A:
This is not easy to undertake by home mechanics because of obscure fasteners, and difficult angles, and is best left to those of the more experienced do-it-yourselfers. When the blower motor is being removed, one should take a note of each part assembled in an orderly way, and this will make it easy to assemble the user again. Start by removing the battery cover and the negative battery terminal. The next step is to remove the steering column covers and instrument cluster, then remove the driver side scuff plate, kick panel, knee bolster, and the instrument cluster trim panel. Disconnect and pull out the steering shaft and the accelerator pedal pedal position sensor and then the brake pedal. Take out the resistor, disconnect the electrical connector with the resistor on the blower motor, remove the screws that hold it in place, and remove the resistor. On the blower motor removal, at least two persons are advisable so that no damage is caused to the fan. The ignition should be turned on, the A/C should be turned on to the FRESH air mode and the key should be switched off. Deassemble blower motor resistor, instrument panel trim strips, glove box assembly and Passenger Junction Box. Disassembly: Unscrew the radio and auto leveling control module and remove the floor air duct and remove the temporary steering stay when needed. Identify the blower case and air intake actuator and delete the blower case mounting screws as well as unplug the air intake actuator connector. Pinch the case of the blower a little forward, turn it around the firewall and take out the whole assembly. Take out the air guide of the evaporator housing and then insert a special tool on the blower motor. On the driver side, remove the electrical connector and the blower motor cooling tube, then pull the blower motor cover using the tab and turn it clockwise. Hold blower motor with an assistant to ensure that it does not fall into the evaporator case. Very carefully remove blower motor assembly. To install, insert the special service tool in the blower motor and insert the assembly in the housing, making sure that it is placed correctly. Install blower cover and press the locking tab and turn anticlockwise till it clips. Lastly, take off the special service tool and do the installation in that order.
