When the CV joints are worn, meaning that an overhaul is needed, investigate every alternative first, without commencing the job, since complete rebuilt driveaxles can be secured on an exchange basis, and much time and labor is saved. A number of auto parts shops stock split type replacement boots which can be installed without the driveaxle leaving the vehicle, which is a convenient option; the driveaxle is however to be removed and the CV joint dismantled and cleaned to ensure it is not contaminated with moisture and dirt which can hasten the wear process. ABS-equipped models have sensor rings on the outer CV joints, which are to be checked whether they have chipped or missing teeth, and, in any case, have the sensor ring replaced. The first part is to take out the driveaxle of the car and fit it to a vise, with the jaws lined with wood or rags, so as not to be damaged. To disassemble, remove the boot clamps, and pull the boot back out of the inner CV joint, and slide the joint housing off, indicating the relative position of the tri-pad to the outer race. And mark the tri-pod and axleshaft to fit back in, remove retainer clip of end of axleshaft, and with hammer and brass punch, pound tri-pod joint out of driveaxle, without damaging bearing surfaces or splines. Wipe the old grease off of the outer race and tri-pod bearing assembly, and examine them, looking for scoring, pitting, or other marks of abnormal wear which might cause their replacement. To reassemble, slide the clamps and boot on the axleshaft, tape the splines, and prevent boot damage, place the tri-pod on the shaft on the marks, and install a new retainer clip. Draw on CV joint grease on the tri-pod assembly, joint housing and boot and slide the boot in, balancing pressure in the boot. Finalize the boot clamps as well as installing the driveaxle. In the case of outer CV joint, disassemble the inner CV joint of axleshaft, and then disassemble the outer CV Boot clamps and push the boot out. Cleanse the inside and outside CV joints with clean solvent and dry with compressed air, with care not to neglect to clean the outer joint, though that is a hard thing to accomplish. Bend the outer CV joint housing, exposing the bearings, inner race, and cage, inspecting them for wear and damage, and replace the driveaxle and outer joint assembly, should there be any damage. Install the outer boot on the driveaxle, tying up vinyl tape around the splines to ensure no damage to the boot, applying grease to the outer joint and boot and loading the joint with grease and putting on fresh clamps. Lastly, wash and refit the inner CV joint and then attach the driveaxle.
