Mazda 3 Power Steering Pump

The Mazda 3 Power Steering Pump allows the driver to turn the wheel with minimum effort by turning engine rotation into hydraulic force that increases steering force. This Power Steering Pump is mounted on the engine and driven by a V-belt or serpentine belt; it pulls fluid into it via an attached or remote reservoir, where it is pressurized and then forced through a high pressure hose to the control valve within the rack and pinion unit, where a balanced or directional flow forces a piston to help in steering. The initial Mazda vehicles of this series applied a plain-vanilla constant-output hydraulic pump, but subsequent Mazda 3 vehicles retained the same belt drive and added an electronically controlled valve which varies the pump flow following signals sent to it by vehicle speed and steering angle sensors, providing abundant assist around parking speeds, and with increased firmness on the highway. The two systems are the same in terms of plumbing where both ends are fitted with a high-pressure line and a low-pressure line is attached and held in place by clamps. Whining due to low fluid, squealing due to a loose belt, leaking around seals or hoses and heavy steering when the pump does not achieve factory pressure are typical trouble signs. Assist loss or abnormal sound should prompt the inspection of the Power Steering Pump and its belt drive. A third generation electronically tuned pump can exhibit over-assistance or none at all if the electronic valve breaks down, thus scan tests are performed before the pump is replaced. Being aware of such differences, Mazda owners will be able to get to know the symptoms and select the appropriate remedial action.

Mazda 3 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install a power steering pump on Mazda 3?
    A:
In order to take off the power steering pump, the cable to the negative battery terminal should be disconnected first. Then take out the bottom splash shield and inner fender shield. Unhook EHPAS control module electrical connectors and take out the front bracket-to-body mounting nut. A drain pan should be placed beneath the hoses to receive the fluid that spills when the hoses are not connected, and then, the return hose should be disconnected to enable as much fluid as possible to come out before the pressure hose fitting is disconnected. Unscrew the remote fluid reservoir hose clamp with the pliers and take out the power steering liquid reservoir. Detach and loosen the banjo bolt that joins the high pressure fluid line to the pump and detach the mounting bracket nuts then remove the power steering pump out of the body taking care not to drop the pump because the attached EHPAS control module would be damaged. Installation should be in the reverse order of removal, making sure to replace the banjo bolt and sealing washers on the high-pressure line, tighten the mounting bolts and the banjo bolt to the desired torque, fill the return hose until the fluid begins dripping out and connect it to the pump, fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid and bleed the power steering hydraulic system and clear any DTCs with a code reader or scan tool.
