Mazda 323 Air Filter

The Mazda 323 Air Filter is the respiratory protector of the car, which prevents the entry of dust and debris into the engine that can lead to loss of power or wear. It captures particles as small as five microns to allow the motor to inhale up to ten thousand gallons of clean air per gallon of gasoline, maintaining fuel economy and throttle response intact. Until the Mazda 323 was introduced in 1976, when it applied a carburetor, the round, pleated paper filter was usually installed under a simple lid on the top of the carburetor and could be removed by loosening a single wing nut and then replacing it. When the model line became fuel injected, the Air Filter became a flat panel model that was installed within a sealed air box linked to the throttle body via a duct, enabling owners simply to remove a few clips or screws in order to get inside it. Both designs are based on the dry, pleated paper core of the Air Filter because the balance of price, airflow, and filtering efficiency is achieved; however, foam or oiled cotton can be applied in the case of extreme dust or performance driving. Regardless of the style, the restriction increases with the amount of dirt that builds up, so Mazda suggests that it should be replaced on time to have comfortable acceleration and ensure the safety of internal components. The new Air Filter must always fit snugly, and the intake duct must also be examined to ensure that all the air entering the engine passes through the filter element, making the engine in your Mazda remain clean and healthy.

Mazda 323 Air Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the air filter in the engine compartment on Mazda 323?
    A:
The air filter is installed in a box inside the left front corner of the engine compartment. To change the air filter, loosen the band of intake air duct, detach the duct/hose and then remove five bolts holding air cleaner cover to the box, lift the cover and pull out the air filter element. Check the outer side of the filtering element; the dirty ones may be replaced, whilst those requiring only blowing dust off the back to the front with the blast of compressed air may be cleaned again. Because this is a type of pleated paper filter, it is not washable and cannot be oiled and in case it cannot be properly cleaned, it must be disposed of and a new one installed. When the cover is off be sure not to drop objects into the housing and never drive the car with the air cleaner off because this can cause excessive wear on the engine and may cause fire accidents. Clean up the inside of the air cleaner housing using a damp cloth and then install the new filter into the housing making certain that the filter fits into the housing, and replace the cover in the same order that it was removed.
