Mazda 323 Throttle Cable Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to check and replace the throttle cable assembly and adjust the line pressure in a transaxle on Mazda 323?
    A:
Inspect the cable and housing and confirm that they are intact, press the accelerator to make the cable travel throughout the entire range of motion, and change the throttle cable assembly in case of need. Take out the square-head plug on the front of the transaxle and fit a 0 to 100 psi oil pressure gauge in the test port. In Park position with the shift lever, start the engine and allow it to heat to normal operating temperature. Adjust idle speed and make sure that it is adjusted properly. Undo the bolts (on the front side of throttle body assembly) that hold the throttle cable to the bracket on the throttle body and begin with the bolt on the driver side, then on the right side. Make sure that the throttle valve lever is closed, be sure to screw the left cable bolt well-tightened and pull throttle cable to the right side of the vehicle until the line pressure is higher than the given range. Open throttle body to the adjustment pressure by pushing throttle cable towards the left side and tighten bolt 2 when needed. Tightly secure right cable bolt, halt the engine and make sure that throttle cable is moving freely. Turn on the engine, accelerate, and allow the engine to run at idle making sure that the line pressure does not exceed the indicated range. In case there are errors in the line pressure, you need to repeat the process of adjusting the line pressure. Switch the engine off, get rid of the pressure gauge and structure the square-head plug in. Unattache the negative cable to the battery, loosen and unscrew the bolts that hold the throttle cable to the bracket, and the first bolt, also known as the driver side bolt. Take out throttle cable in the bracket and throttle lever, loosen lug nuts on the front wheel (left), raise the vehicle, and place it on jackstands securely and remove the wheel and splash shield. Order to drain transaxle lubricant in an appropriate container, position engine with a engine hoist or jack with a wood block, and remove engine support subframe and transverse subframe on 1995 and later models with 1.8 Liter DOHC engine. Before removing the valve body off the transaxle, disconnect the solenoid connectors and remove the transaxle transaxle oil pan, gasket, the control valve body mounting bolts and the transaxle oil pan. Disassemble the throttle cable off throttle cam in transaxle and the mounting bolts and install a new throttle cable to throttle cam which is then connected to throttle lever on throttle body.
